No matter what taste you have in decorating or furniture styles, there are wrought iron wall lights that will go fabulously with whatever you have in mind. Even though they were focused on matching the Mediterranean furniture of the 1970s, there are so many styles now that you just can’t go wrong. The sleekest modern designs or Victorian antiques can all look marvelous with the right lighting.
There are many styles and sizes to choose from. You even have your choice of electric lights that can be hardwired directly into the wall rather than having those ugly cords hanging all over, detracting from the look. Some actually run on batteries and can be hung using special hooks or even heavy duty double sided tape made just for this purpose.
Because wrought iron is a form of iron, it will oxidize and rust if not tended to carefully. This usually isn’t a problem in dry climates, but in areas of high humidity, expect this to be a problem. Some people love to see the sheen that occurs after years of this rusting process, and others don’t want to be bothered with the constant clean up of this shedding process. If picking up pieces of iron for years to come is not your idea of fun, you need to protect the fixtures with a light spray of either a cooking oil or even a light coat of Vaseline; anything that will repel the water in the air.
Original wrought iron lights of course were really sconces. They held candles rather than electrical wiring. Surviving models from the middle ages show that these were sturdily constructed in order to hold what could easily have been 20 pound candles which were meant to burn continuously throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours. Heavy buildup of carbon deposits actually helped keep these blackened, rather than allowing them to change colors as some wrought iron will do after years of use.
The ones from Victorian times tended to have more than one purpose. Typically they would hang on a wall and act as room lights, and could easily be removed to walk around the house with safely.
Modern varieties tend to come in pairs or sets. These groupings can be gorgeous together, or they can be broken up and used in separate areas.
There are many price ranges and qualities to choose from to suit every room and budget.
